The Illuminate 2019 festival marks the opening of the international Mayflower 400 commemoration year 2020. It is a spectacular and light-based festival that connects different locations across the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and the United States. Illuminate festivals have been taking place in both Plymouth (UK) and Plymouth (MA) for several years. They build on the core values of Mayflower 400, which are humanity, freedom, imagination and future (Mayflower 400, 2019b).
2020 will be a year of events commemorating the sailing of the Mayflower to the New World, which happened 400 years ago in 1620. In the build up to and during 2020, 11 UK destinations alongside with locations in the US and the Netherlands have created an international Mayflower Trail and an accompanying cultural programme (Mayflower 400, 2019a).
Illuminate light festival in Plymouth will run from 28 November to 01 December 2019 with installations at Royal William Yard, the Barbican, the Waterfront and Mount Edgcumbe. The organizers promise a series of dazzling installations and projections, that will make Plymouth shine ahead of the official commemorations (Mayflower 400, 2019c) .
