Provisional Concept for Illuminate Project

My basic concept:

I wish to explore ideas around imagination and freedom – in my opinion, both topics are best expressed with the endless vastness of the ocean. Not only are oceans, beaches and coastlines a place to relax and let the imagination run free, they were also an integral part of the Mayflower voyage. The water and the waves were the only things the Mayflower pilgrims saw in those awful months they spent on the Atlantic Ocean.  I thought about what I must have felt like to stare at the stormy sea for weeks, waiting and hoping for a safe arrival in the new world. I wondered about how the ocean must have looked somehow different for each of them. The idea of perception is an important part of my concept.

My medium:

I will create an animation that uses moving image combined with still images. The background of my animation will be a film clip of the ocean, neither too stormy nor too calm. I want slight movement within the water (small waves,…) but the video itself will be filmed on a tripod to avoid any additional shaking. On top of the film clip I will add a still image. This will be a colour palette of all the colours that are in the video clip. The only hearable sound will be the waves and the water.

My technical requirements:

I will need a projector, an extension cable and a socket/generator. Moreover, I will need to find a way to protect the equipment against humidity and rain.

My location:

I am flexible with the location. I’d prefer a wall close to the water to project my image on.
