When I spoke to my lecturer Tim about my new idea for the Illuminate project, he introduced me to the work of Niina Vatanen. She is a visual artist based in Helsinki and her work is focused on different aspects of seeing and perception. Vatanen also works with archive material, which I find extremely fascinating.
She takes old photographs and works with them on a new creative basis. I am especially fascinated by her series of work “Composition Studies” in which she digitally alters archive images with colourful lines. They all find their responding line somewhere in the photograph.

I simply love this interplay of perception between the visible and the non-visible, between the surface and the underlying theme. Vatanen seems to examine the potential of hidden images and discover meanings and patterns that are not even present.
