I visited the Illuminate Festival on the second day of the festival. Unfortunately, I only made it to the Royal William Yard but failed to see the installations of my classmates at the Mount Edgcumbe. The reason for that were the poorly scheduled ferry times – I simply didn’t have enough time to wait for a ferry to take me over to Rame peninsula where I would have needed to wait for another 1,5 hours to catch a ferry back.
I spend all my time at the Royal William Yard instead, taking enough time to see all the artwork there. Most of the installations I found very inspiring and fascinating, especially “Camoflage” by Blast Art and “Immersive” by the Arcan Collective.
What I didn’t like about the festival was the general organisation: There were some installations I simply couldn’t find because the map was not clear enough on how to find the related entrance into the building, e.g. “Trinity” by Ada Krzoska or “Regeneration” by Nathanie J. Hall. Also, I would have like more detailed information about the different projections on the walls of Mills Bakery, as I never knew how many there were or when the “Tree of Memory” would be there again.
But all in all, I enjoyed my visit at Royal William Yard. I think the atmosphere and the architecture of the complex make the installations even more special – who wouldn’t love the laser beams lighting over the old walls and chimneys?
