I decided to discard my project concept for the Illuminate festival and come up with a new idea. The reason for that was that I found it difficult to film my own footage of the sea, given the little time I had left, the weather and the limitations of my own equipment.
I therefore decided to work with stock footage completely and change my conceptual approach. Tim recommended working with screen savers – they are available in high resolution and often very good photographs. I liked the idea of creatively commenting on images that already exist. I chose two famous screen savers, both showing the El Capitan in Yosemite national park.

Inspired by the work of Niina Vatanen, I used After Effects and overlayed the photos with colourful lines, using the trim path option in the software. I chose colours that appeared somewhere in the picture to have some kind of consistency.
When I was done, I wanted to further experiment with the animations and tried using different blending modes for the lines. There are now two version of each animation, one using the “Normal” blending mode (opaque pixels will cover the pixels directly below them without applying any math) and one with the “Difference” blending mode (this ones uses the difference of the base and blend pixels as the resulting blend).
