Inspiration: Anna Columbine

My lecturer Tim Mills introduced me to the work of Anna Columbine, an artist based in Manchester who works with a range of media including drawing, installation and photography.

Tim recommend me to have a closer look at her body of work “Colour Mapping- Versions”, which was first shown at the exhibition In Nothing Flat at Old Granada Studios in November 2017.

I looked at the work of Anna Columbine and immediately understood why Tim had recommended it as inspiration. Like my provisional concept for the Illuminate festival her work deals with pinpointing the colour and feeling of an image or place. She achieves this effect through mixing and matching colours in paint to a particular part of the image. The series consists of five framed and hand printed 35mm photographs but is still ongoing.

The artist herself explained that she uses numerous mixtures and combinations of paint in an attempt to find and replicate the true colours of the images (Columbine, 2019). I like how the pieces question my habit of perception and are an exciting possibility to explore materials and methods. Anna Columbine succeeds in “an investigation and interest into the flatness and colours found in film photography, the tactility of material and the materiality of film, and how they can intertwine with each other” (Columbine, 2019).
